A year and a half, they aren't completing quests, aren't searching for treasures, not listening to NPCs, abandoned Ireena and are antagonizing Strahd. If you're only concerned about utility/strength with this ability, humanoids is probably your best bet, because humanoids covers such a huge blanket.
