These arthropods inhabited Palaeozoic oceans for more than 300 million years from the Cambrian through to the Permian, and more than 20,000 species have been described. Despite their abundance, and familiarity to fossil collectors, an unresolved question is the position of trilobites in the arthropod Tree of Life. WebbTrilobites, horseshoe crabs and sea scorpions have similar spine rows along the inner margin of their legs. The lamellae on the outer leg branch of trilobites are similar (and thought to have the same evolutionary origin) as the filaments of the book gills of horseshoe crabs and book lungs of arachnids.
