WebbThis is the question that theories of well-being (or prudential value or self-interest, to use a couple of common synonyms) try to answer. Some hold that it is only pleasure or happiness that is ultimately good for us, while others think it is getting what we want or leading the kind of life that meets our own standards. WebbA complete theory of well-being must be able to give a coherent and compelling account of the positive values of both pleasant and unpleasant life experiences, especially suffering. Both Ryff’s model and my meaning-management model meet this criterion. Paula Robinson’s model of mental fitness also meets this criterion.
